I’m Over 40. I’m Not Difficult… You’re Just Used to Me Having No Boundaries.

Somewhere along the way, women over 40 started getting called “difficult” for doing things that should have been normal all along.
Saying no.
Protecting our peace.
Not answering every call.
Not volunteering for stress.
Not overexplaining.
Not shrinking.
Not rescuing grown people from situations they personally handcrafted.
And somehow, that makes us the problem.
Interesting.
For years, many of us were praised for being flexible, dependable, patient, understanding, and strong. But let’s be honest—sometimes “strong” was just a polite way of saying, she’ll carry what nobody else wants to deal with.
We were the fixers. The peacemakers. The overachievers. The emotional support department. The unpaid life managers. The women holding together homes, jobs, relationships, teams, families, calendars, and sometimes people’s common sense.
And now that we’ve decided to put some of that weight down, people are confused.
Now we’re “different.”
Now we’ve “changed.”
Now we have “an attitude.”
Well… yes.
Not a bad attitude. A clarified one.
Because after 40, many women are no longer interested in performing exhaustion as a personality trait. We are no longer confusing access with intimacy, overgiving with loyalty, or self-abandonment with love.
We are not difficult.
We are discerning.
There is a difference.
At this stage of life, many of us have learned that every invitation does not deserve a yes. Every inconvenience is not our assignment. Every disagreement does not need our emotional labor. And every person who wants access to us is not automatically entitled to it.
That is not bitterness.
That is wisdom with receipts.
Women over 40 are in a different season. We are still ambitious. Still loving. Still capable. Still nurturing. Still building businesses, leading teams, raising children, supporting families, and showing up for the people we care about.
But we are doing it with better boundaries.
We are saying:
“No, that doesn’t work for me.”
“I’m unavailable.”
“I cannot take that on.”
“I heard you. My answer is still no.”
“Respectfully, absolutely not.”
And perhaps my personal favorite: “I saw the message. I chose peace.”
This is what growth looks like when it stops trying to be likable all the time.
We are not becoming rude.
We are becoming honest.
We are not becoming selfish.
We are becoming included in our own list of priorities.
We are not becoming harder to love.
We are becoming harder to misuse.
That shift may feel uncomfortable to people who benefited from the version of us that said yes too quickly, explained too much, tolerated too long, and carried too much.
But that discomfort is not ours to fix.
Because over 40, many women are finally learning this simple truth:
A boundary is not an attitude problem.
A standard is not disrespect.
And “no” is not a crisis.
So no, I’m not difficult.
You’re just meeting the version of me that has healed enough to stop making myself uncomfortable so everybody else can feel at home.
And honestly?
She’s my favorite version.
